The Big Takeover

February 26, 2019

Thanks to The Big Takeover for premiering the video for my song Edge of Something. The video was directed by my talented friend Deborah Magocsi, with visual effects by Tom Bayne, special help from Jason Boyd, turtle footage by Zoe Serafinowicz & Soraya Limare, beach footage I’ve shot in Ireland over the years,  and it features the acting talents of my pal Benjamin Cartel. We shot it at Riis Beach last May and also at the original Hanks Saloon sometime last spring.

You can read the article about the inspiration behind the song and watch the video here.

March 19th I’ll be participating in the Bushwick Book Club show at Barbès. We’re all writing songs inspred by Zadie Smith’s White Teeth.

And then March 25th, I’m singing with Jim Andralis and the Syntonics at Joe’s Pub. I love singing with these people. Tickets available here!

January/February

December 30, 2018

On January 16th, I’ll be participating in the Bushwick Book Club show in New Orleans! We’ll each be performing one song we wrote inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s Galapagos and a couple of others inspired by books of our choosing.

I’ll also be singing a few songs with Charlie Nieland and Susan Hwang at the Circle Bar in New Orleans on January 17th at 10pm. Come along!

Picture from the holiday party/show I put together at Mirror in the Woods in December.

I’m singing at the Bushwick Book Club’s 10th anniversary show at Mirror in the Woods in Brooklyn on January 24th. We’ll all be writing songs inspired by Vonnegut’s Slapstick.

On February 15th, I’ll be singing at the Love Hangover’s 20th Anniversary Show at Bowery Electric. I’m singing a couple duets (by Nick Cave and the Replacements!!) with Love Hangover founder, Richard Alwyn Fisher. There are lots of great people on this bill – you can read about it here.

And then on February 18th, I’m putting together a night of music called 5 x 5 at Sid Gold’s Request Room! The concept is simple. 5 songwriters will each play 5 songs. Maybe some of us will collaborate. The songwriters are Gary Burton, Andi Rae Healy, Rembert Block, Sugar Lake City “Lite” (Verena Wiesendanger and Julian Maile) and me! As the show’s at Sid Gold’s, it’ll be followed by top-notch piano karaoke. Come for the originals, stay for the karaoke. Here’s a cool flyer by Scott MX Turner. Thanks Brassai for letting me borrow the photograph from the internet.

Hanks Saloon November 15th

October 15, 2018

November 15th, my band will be playing our last show at Hank’s Saloon before it moves to a new location. We’re sharing the bill with talented friends Andi Rae Healy, Bryan Dunn and Bucky Hayes. I’d love to see you there! We’re playing at 8pm but you should come for the whole thing!

Wednesday, November 28th, I’m participating in the Bushwick Book Club show at Barbès. Everyone’s writing songs inspired by The Sleep Walker’s Guide to Dancing by Mira Jacobs. I’ll also be dancing in a piece choreographed by BBC Dance Team Captain, Nicola Yvette Hughes.

And on Sunday, December 9th, I’m hosting and singing a few songs at musical holiday party type of thing at Mirror in the Woods in Gowanus. I’ve invited several friends to each play a few songs including Dave Derby, Patricia Santos, Adam Rubenstein, Susan Hwang, Benjamin Cartel, Jim Andralis, Larry Krone, Andi Rae HealyCharlie Nieland, and Oil (Jon Crider, Ann Bicknell and Bick Bicknell).  The venue is BYOB and BYOF so BYO whatever-you-want and come hang out with us. I’ll be bringing box wine (suggested donation) and Italian cookies for all.
In these strange times, it’s all the more important to get people together to play music and enjoy life!

summertime

July 15, 2018

Thanks so much to everyone who made it to my (sold out!!) record release show a couple weeks ago at Rockwood Music Hall. It meant a lot to me that so many people showed up! Here’s a picture from the show!

Next up, I’m participating in the Bushwick Book Club show on July 25th at Barbès. This time we’re all writing songs inspired by Dean Haspiel’s new graphic novel, The Red Hook. Dean will be presenting a slide show and signing books which will be available at the show. I’m writing and performing one new song as well as performing as part of BBC’s “Dance Team” in a piece choreographed by Nicola Yvette Hughes.

Benjamin Cartel and I are headed into the studio to record a few covers by the likes of Tom Petty, Kirsty MacColl and Townes Van Zandt.

I’m putting together a bill at Hank’s Saloon on September 6th with my band, Gramercy Arms (I’ll be singing some harmony with them) and Bubble.

And on September 19th, I’m filling in for Susan Hwang while she’s away and hosting the Bushwick Book Club at Barbès. I’ll also be performing a song in a great line-up that includes John S Hall, Renée LoBue, Gary Burton, Jim Andralis, Spiritchild and many others!

And I just filmed a One on One Cellar Session at City Winery with Ehud Lazin. I sang Dark Corners of You Mind, You Were Never Really Here (written for Bushwick Book Club, inspired by Jonathan Ames’ book of the same title) and Spain. John Kengla on bass, Andrea Longato on guitar and Susan Hwang on harmonies and shaker.

Record Release Show/ Rockwood 3/ June 28th

May 4, 2018

The record release show for my new album, The Fastness, is happening on June 28th at Rockwood Music Hall, Stage 3 at 8:30. Tickets are available here!

The Fastness is made up of 10 new songs written by me. It features Kirk Schoenherr on guitar, John Kenlga on bass, Rob Heath on drums, me on singing and harmonium and Susan Hwang, Leslie Graves and Julie DeLano on harmonies.  It was produced and engineered by Joe Rogers, mastered by Charlie Nieland with album design by Scott MX Turner. I’m happy with it. Come celebrate with us on June 28th at Rockwood.

You can buy a physical CD here or download the album here.

I took the album cover photo in Iceland last summer from a whale-watching boat just outside of Reykjavik Harbor.

The term ‘the fastness’ was introduced to me by my friend, playwright and songwriter, Hywel John.  It means, ” a secure refuge, especially a place well protected by natural features.” At the time he mentioned it, I was in the middle of nowhere in Ireland writing some new songs and the idea of a fastness appealed to me (still does) and worked its way into some of these songs.

You can read great reviews of the album in New York Music Daily and Goldmine Magazine. And you can read another nice review and listen to the first track off the album, The Master, here on Celeb Mix.

Anyway, would love to see you on June 28th at Rockwood Music Hall.

I just got back from a fantastic trip to Los Angeles. I was there for the 2nd Bushwick Book Club show in celebration of Jonathan Ames’ brilliant, new book, You Were Never Really Here. Read it! And then see the movie. Here are a couple pictures from the LA show.
